What’s Next: How small businesses can thrive when government pandemic support runs dry?

Managing staff and payroll, arranging supply chains, choosing and understanding your insurance, and dealing with Vancouver’s high rents and property taxes are all factors that grew exponentially more challenging as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in 2020. Lately, it’s clear the health crisis is tightening its grip.

But from these troubles emerge perseverance, bright ideas and creativity to adapt, survive and even thrive as a small business operator.

On Tuesday, Dec.1 from noon to 1pm (Pacific) Talk Shop, together with Business in Vancouver multimedia reporter Hayley Woodin, are bringing together an exceptional online panel to tackle the challenges and lessons learned in the small business community during this pandemic.

Each of our panellists bring a unique standpoint and set of skills to this conversation, which will detail a shared experience during the pandemic. The discussion will also provide a roadmap of what you need to know as we stare down this second wave together so that your business can survive, and even thrive.

• Anthony Vecchio, a Vancouver lawyer and co-founder of Slater Vecchio law firm, which has recently developed a legal program to help small businesses to manage and understand their business interruption insurance coverage within the pandemic.

• David Gens, CEO and founder of leading Canadian fintech company, Merchant Growth, and a Director of the Canadian Lenders Association. David understands the challenges that small businesses are facing when it comes to financing.

• Dalana Fleming, owner of The Cake and the Giraffe, who has spent more than 12 years designing custom wedding cakes and sweet treats for special occasions in Vancouver. Dalana will share her business challenges, successes and strategy to survive and thrive in 2021.
