We are big proponents of talking about mental health with an open and supportive attitude. With recent successful campaigns by Bell for Let’s Talk Day and the Vancouver Canucks’ Mind Check, we are in full agreement that talking about mental health is the best place to start to get rid of the stigma and is particularly important in the workplace.
Here are a few ways we’re supporting our team with their mental health and wellbeing at Talk Shop Media.
Teamwork is the name of the game in our office. Our team has a great open dialogue to bounce ideas off each other when it comes to PR and that same open dialogue exists when it comes to life, stress, challenges and successes as well. We listen and truly care for one another. We can reach out to anyone in the company if there is ever a concern, emergency, family issue or just to ask for support, discretion or a helping hand. This openness allows us to help each other deal with the stresses of PR and of everyday life that can accumulate and contribute to mental health concerns.
Talk Shop has a strong belief in the power of mentorship and employs a team wide program. Each senior team member is paired with a more junior member to encourage a confidential and personal relationship within the team. These are great opportunities to learn about our team members one on one and develop a confidant on the team you can talk to about personal and professional development.
One of the scariest parts of mental health is not knowing who to turn to for help. As a part of that, Talk Shop provides our entire full time team with a comprehensive health benefits plan. Access to different forms of help to deal with stress and other mental health issues are available through this program. This proactive approach to mental health gives our team members access to professional help when they need it.
Endorphins produced from physical activity have been shown to help support mental health and can ease symptoms. Talk Shop encourages our team to bike to work and keep active with monthly health challenges. To this end, Talk Shop provides a safe space to store bikes in the office for every member who bikes to work.
We also allow our team members to bring in their #PRpups – we believe having dogs in the office is therapeutic. They definitely add snuggle time, puppy kisses, laugher and “awwww” to our office.
These are just a few of the areas we actively review and discuss with our team to help encourage a healthy dialogue around mental health. It is so important to take the physical and mental wellbeing of our team seriously, so they can perform at their best and lead happy healthy lives as well.
Up next week, a look at Talk Shop team culture.
