Long summer and fall days call for patios, relaxing in the sun, and spending time with friends and family. At Talk Shop, one of our favourite places to do that is BC’s Okanagan. Many of us take every opportunity to visit on the weekends, and we even planned our last work retreat there. Turns out, we’re not the only ones who love the area this much. The Okanagan Valley was just named the world’s second best wine region to visit by USA Today, so now is as good of time as any to visit! Stuck on where to stay? As self-professed Okanagan experts, we can make a few recommendations.

If you’re craving a weekend getaway but on a budget, Airbnb has plenty of unique homes and rooms available for rent all throughout the Okanagan. From lakeside cottages to tipis, there is something for everyone. Of course, some of you might be looking for something a bit more luxurious when heading to the Okanagan, and the Sparkling Hills Resort in Vernon is about as luxurious as it gets. The wellness resort offers a variety of luxury rooms and penthouses, as well as seven different saunas, an infinity pool, spa and more. Not to mention that the entire resort features 3.5 million Swarovski crystals in it’s architecture. And of course, it has that lake view the Okanagan is famous for.

However, if you consider yourself a serious Okanagan lover and want something a little more permanent, here are a couple developments we love!

If you’ve ever driven to the Okanagan, you’ve probably noticed the oversized Adirondak (Muskoka) chairs on the side of the highway. Follow them all the way to The Cottages on Osoyoos Lake, where you’ll find a spectacular 70-acre gated lakefront community. With 20 acres of green-space, boat slips, walking trails, an amenity Club House, and the option to completely customize your cottage, the Cottages makes the perfect vacation escape. Spend your days cycling the Kettle Valley Rail Trail or sipping a dessert wine from Black Hills Winery as you watch the sun set.

If you want to live a little closer to the infamous Ogopogo, the Lakestone community might be for you. Located on the east shore of Okanagan Lake between Vernon and Kelowna, Lakestone is a master-planned community of 1,365 residences. Not only do you get the opportunity to build the dream home you’ve always wanted, but every lot has a view of the lake. With your spare time, tour local wineries or spend a day on the green at the fabulous Predator Ridge Golf Resort.

These are just a few of the great places to stay or buy in the Okanagan. If you’re planning a trip out there, let us know about it and feel free to bring us back a bottle of wine!
