Before the launch of their first ever Made in Strathcona tours, the Strathcona Business Improvement Association (SBIA) came to Talk Shop Media with a mission. The goal was to bring attention to the local businesses participating in the tours, create a buzz in the media around Strathcona as a thriving hub for independent businesses, and of course spread the word of the public tours.

The tours themselves were an exciting endeavour, allowing the public a first-hand look into the inner workings of their choice of two impressive Strathcona businesses. Excited to get Vancouver buzzing, Talk Shop Media dialed into their creative roots and took outside-the-box thinking to a new level with inspired media invitations and an ambitious media preview tour.

The Talk Shop Team sent out mini tackle boxes filled with clues like coffee beans, bottle openers and mini-whisks and screwdrivers, we challenged Vancouver’s top bloggers, print reporters and online writers to guess which businesses they’d be visiting on their media tour of Strathcona. A successful play to the media’s curiosity and creativity, 14 local media accepted the invitation and came out to see for themselves what Strathcona has to offer.

The tour led media attendees to five diverse Strathcona businesses where each respective owner gave small-scale building tours, presentations and demonstrations outlining what they do and why they’ve chosen Strathcona as the ideal place to set up shop. This initiative coupled with a creative press release, tailored media pitching and community event postings all led to Talk Shop Media starting the spirited conversation about Vancouver’s thriving business hub; Strathcona.

The end results were impressive. With 14 media attending the tour and even more interested in Strathcona’s story, Talk Shop Media secured over 26 media hits in outlets such as WE VancouverThe Vancouver Sun,  BC Business,  The Georgia Straight, multiple popular local blogs and four major television broadcast spots!
