University of British Columbia
The University of British Columbia engaged Talk Shop to conduct media training with faculty members from equity-seeking groups. So often, media reach out to the same known sources, and there is not much variety in thought leaders out of the university. The purpose of this session was to empower academics from equity-seeking groups, teaching them the fundamentals of media interviews. The goal was to also build confidence and support with empowering the group of subject matter experts.
Our Approach:
Talk Shop conducted a session within the framework of ‘meeting people where they are at’. We worked to understand participants' knowledge and comfort levels with speaking to the media and then built from there. Each participant had a unique mock interview scenario related to their area of expertise. Participants left the session feeling empowered, and with a basic understanding of how the media operates. They left understanding interview techniques such as ‘blocking’, ‘bridging’, and ‘flagging’. Spokespeople gained confidence in their abilities and left feeling empowered.
