Challenge

Din Tai Fung is one of the world’s most celebrated restaurant brands, but ahead of May 2025, it had never had a presence in Canada. Its first Canadian location in Vancouver represented more than a restaurant opening: it was an opportunity to introduce the Taiwanese brand to a new market and turn its arrival into a cultural and culinary moment.

The challenge wasn’t simply generating awareness, Talk Shop needed to build excitement at the right scale while establishing the brand locally from day one. That meant earning meaningful media attention, engaging the right tastemakers and creators, driving opening-week reservations — all while ensuring its Canadian debut lived up to its global reputation.

Our Approach

Talk Shop built the launch strategy around three ideas: position DTF as a steward of Taiwanese culinary tradition rather than a trendy opening, let media and tastemakers experience the space and craftsmanship firsthand, and root the brand in Vancouver’s community from day one.

That played out across three events: a construction-site behind-the-scenes tour for media; a 150-person VIP night with a seven-course meal, live custom chopstick engraving, and a live DJ set from a local Taiwanese DJ; and a ribbon-cutting where calligrapher Yu Chung Ling unveiled a scroll honoring his father’s original Din Tai Fung emblem, later donated to the Chinese Canadian Museum. Talk Shop invited top-tier media, team members of The Vancouver Rise FC, and 80+ food and culture creators to experience the restaurant themselves and let the coverage happen organically.

The campaign cleared every target: 361 stories and 206 million-plus impressions, virtually all of it positive or neutral, plus 3.9 million influencer reach from organic posts alone. Reservations sold out before opening day, with lines forming outside on day one. DTF’s Vancouver debut is now one of the most-covered restaurant launches in the city’s history, and the calligraphy scroll remains a lasting piece of the story at the Chinese Canadian Museum.
