Mucinex is a category leader in the U.S., but in Canada it faced a strange kind of invisibility. Brand awareness sat at just 42%, even though Canadians already knew Mr. Mucus, the brand's long-running character for chest congestion, on sight. The problem was that recognition never converted into brand recall: Mr. M doesn't appear on packaging, which reads as clinical and easy to lose in a crowded pharmacy aisle, so consumers who liked the character had no line back to the product.
Mucinex needed a way to close that gap for adults 18 to 54 across English and French Canada: build cultural relevance in a distinctly Canadian voice, make the connection between Mr. M and Mucinex impossible to miss, and do it through humour rather than the clinical, education-heavy messaging the category defaults to, since research showed Canadians respond to ironic, self-deprecating comedy over overt punchlines.
Our Approach
Talk Shop developed a fully integrated Canadian relaunch for Mucinex, built around one simple idea: Mr. M thought Canada was the perfect place for cold and flu — but Canadians refuse to let congestion get in their way.
The campaign brought that idea to life through three large-scale experiential activations, with Mr. M disrupting commuters at Toronto’s Union Station, crashing an OHL hockey practice in Oshawa and taking over BC’s Sea to Sky Gondola. Additional appearances at Peggy’s Cove, Banff and downtown Toronto extended his cross-country tour, while each stop became a content engine amplified through earned media, on-site and lifestyle influencers, paid and organic social, and a dedicated Mr. M landing page. The integrated program also included a national press release, sponsored broadcast across CP24, CTV Toronto and CTV2, programmatic advertising with The Weather Network, point-of-sale promotions at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmacie Jean Coutu, consumer sampling and coupons, and medically grounded education from expert spokesperson Dr. Sarah Habibi. Together, the tactics connected Mr. M directly to Mucinex while reinforcing the brand’s differentiated 12-hour congestion relief message at every touchpoint.

Measurement was aligned directly to campaign objectives, focusing on awareness, association, and sustained visibility. Results included: household penetration (HHP) index at 122—meaning Mucinex was purchased by 22% more Canadian households than the category average—outperforming the prior year and signalling expanded reach into new homes; 17% increase in sales over the last twelve weeks from campaign launch to present, peaking at an impressive 38% increase during the height of flu season; 2.97M social views and 20.9K total social engagements; 600+ customer interactions at Union Station; and strong influencer engagement rates (3.18% average), exceeding industry benchmarks. Coverage and content consistently reinforced the connection between Mr. M and Mucinex, successfully addressing the core challenge that many Canadians recognized the character, but not the brand behind him—this can also be tied to the increase in HHP, which signifies a growing customer base and broader market reach.
